As mentioned in the episode on “Squanto’s Legacy and Pilgrim Anecdotes,” Shawn from Chelmsford, Massachusetts took it upon himself to track down the location of the archeological site of the Popham Colony of 1607-08, and took some pictures. Captions provided by Shawn:
The first photo is a complete panorama of exactly where Fort Edward which was the name of the Popham Colony. It fits exactly where archeological excavations were done and artifacts were found.
I’m not sure who decided that an American flag (someone had lowered it by the time I took the photo) was the appropriate flag but it was probably some government officials rationalization. They should have listened to your podcast as background first.
The reproduction of The Virginia was being completed in Bath, Maine by volunteers some miles up the Kennebec River from where it was actually originally built. It was amazing.
Ironically, the reproduction is being built, just by chance, about 1 mile from Bath Iron Works where the latest US Naval destroyers are being built. I guess the colonists choose a good river 400 odd years ago to build the first ship.
Thank you Shawn! And to the rest of you, if you have pictures of any of the places we have “visited” in The History of the Americans Podcast, by all means send them along!
