The Declaration of Independence (National Archives transcription)
Thanks for publishing this! I followed your suggestion and subjected my family to listening to the beginning of the Declaration of Independence. Before this, we asked our 8-year-old what she knows about the holiday, and talked about some more. Afterward, we explained what the old-timey language was saying. So she actually learned something! And then wanted to get on to listening to something more fun. The 1-year-old took the whole thing in stride.
This was the most appropriate thing we did to mark the occasion, and it honestly did make me feel more in the spirit of the holiday. Talking about it with kids pushes your mind back to the fundamentals. It made me appreciate that, regardless of the problems of the current moment, we have a pretty good thing going in this country.
